I spent a few hours this morning helping out the Sewing Saints chapter of Days For Girls International in my home town of Lansing, New York. They are hosting a 2 day sewing event to create 50 complete kits for DFGI. Organizer, Andra Benson, has done this before and there was definitely a learning curve the first time through but she has it down to a science and the place was a well oiled machine with over a dozen volunteers there this morning. Some were cutting fabric, others gluing PUL, I sewed the inside seams of the shields while the woman beside me (Denise) turned them and topstitched them. A few people were making the drawstring totes for the kit supplies to go into. It was GREAT! |
I really wish I'd taken some photos while I was there...but alas I was too carried away sewing! The photo to the right here shows what a finished kits looks like. A complete kit is made up of: 2 shields, 8 liners, 2 pairs of panties, 1 washcloth, 1 travel-sized bar of soap, 2 gallon sized Ziploc freezer bags, 1 visual instruction sheet and a colorful drawstring bag. All of the pattern pieces and detailed instructions are available on the DFGI website. They are very specific about how the items are made and what goes into the kits so if you are interested in helping out, please visit the site and spend some time to familiarize yourself with the particulars. |
You'll also want to check to see if there is a DFGI chapter in your area. Sew-ins for DFGI pop up all over the place and attending one is a lot of fun and a great way to navigate all the details to getting these amazing, life changing kits created!
